Sophomore Dies in Kiln Explosion
Special Report
While going through some old boxes with a friend I came across this old college newspaper with an article about the untimely death of a girl name Fawn Liebowitz. Just felt it sort of sad that her life was cut so short. She would have been about 64 years old now. I was so taken by the paper that I decided to not run “Nutjob of the Week” this week, but instead just post this newspaper article.

In an odd coincidence I have a ceramic pot made by Fawn. It’s unusual because it’s shaped like a doobie, and has an inscription on the bottom “smoke a fatty”. Anyway, here is a scan of the paper for you to peruse. Perhaps it will jog memories of your own college experiences.

DUDE

Spearchucker, Mass (AP) Friday evening ruffians from nearby Faber College created an incident at a negro nightclub near here.  The students from Faber (reportedly on double-secret probation) were off campus illegally when the incident happened.
A performer at the Dexter Lake Club, a Mr. Otis Day (Otis Day and the Knights, performing nightly until Sept 28th) identified the young men as members of the Delta House on the Faber College campus.
Authorities have been unable investigate the incident as yet because of the tragedy on the Dickinson  campus this past Thursday.

Wounded Deer, Mass. Death stocked the Emily Dickinson College family Thursday when sophomore sociology major Fawn Liebowitz, 20 from Fort Wayne, Indiana was tragically killed while firing a pot in the new kiln in Sylvia Plath Hall.
Wounded Deer Fire Chief Benlard Mutt described the scene as “messy.” “It was hard to tell the pot shards from the body parts,” said the pyrodefense professional. “The recently installed Kraftmaster 2000 kiln apparently had a glitch. She just blew like a frog sucking on a cherry bomb,” said the Chief.
The cleanup of Plath Hall has been complicated by a thin coat of glaze that has affixed many of the body parts to the light fixtures and hand railings. There has been some talk among students of renaming Plath Hall to Fawn Hall. But Emily Dickinson Dean of Students, Isadora Doughnut, contra-claims that “all of her North of The Doors has already been cleaned up, so Sylvia Plath Hall will be back to life soon.”

BECAUSE I could not stop for Death,
He kindly stopped for me;
The carriage held but just ourselves
And Immortality.

Ms. Liebowitz was remembered by her classmates as a lively minx, spirited and effervescent. Until she was blown to bits, her best feature (say her friends) was her smile. Her roommate, Shelly Dubinsky (sophomore, primitive cultures), describe Fawn as “a special friend who liked to share her thoughts and experiences, and who had a curiosity about life and relationships. Fawn would often experiment with different kinds of relationships. Lets just say she had an insatiable curiosity about men and women,” said Ms. Dubinsky.
A boyfriend, Frank Lymon from Amherst College reportedly told Fawns friends that "We were engaged to be engaged." "She was going to make a pot for me," he said.
Services will be held at Susan B. Anthony Hall on Wednesday.  The family has requested that any donations be given to the Pottery for Peace Foundation located on campus.

Dude, what ARE you smoking? I think this was the weirdest thing I ever read here.

So let me get this straight: she explodes in a freak kiln accident and the glaze makes her guts stick everywhere?

I for one would like to thank Dude for cleaning up a bit of the Animal House back story. I always wondered about the details of Fawn's tragic death, and suspected that the PC bastards at ED College were covering things up. Kilns kill, people! That said, even though I have watched this movie more than any other, there remain some unanswered questions, such as...

How old WAS Dean Wormer's daughter?

Was the shot of Donald Sutherland's ass really necessary?

How did Mandy Pepperidge not see Bluto while he ogled her through the window? (side note: according to IMDB, "Mandy" is now 60 years old. This creeps me out to no end.)

What's so bad about a pledge pin on a uniform?

From the "art imitates life" department. In his first credited role, Kevin Bacon plays frat boy "Chip Diller." Ten years later your truly became a frat boy, and, I shit you not, had a fraternity brother named "Chip Diller." Was he a tool? Yes, yes he was.

Umm....they must be having trouble with kilns these days...

Flinnage, PA (Associated Press) Tragedy struck the small, close-knit Emily Dickinson College community Thursday when a kiln explosion on campus took the life of one of its students.

Fawn Liebowitz, 20, a sophomore Home Economics major from Ft. Wayne, Indiana, was working near one of two large kilns in Meredith Hall when it exploded, killing her instantly. Flinnage Fire Chief David Hawkins confirmed that over sixty pieces of pottery were being fired for the first time in the DuKane Craftmaster when the mishap occurred. "We have no knowledge of any problems with the unit ever," he said.
